Some career paths are straight lines. Others take dramatic turns. Then, there are stories like Dr. Tameka Bryant’s, where a complete collapse turns into something stronger than ever before. Some people climb to success. Tameka rebuilt herself brick by brick and created her own tower.
I had the absolute pleasure of sitting down with Tameka, the president of TREH International, on my podcast. Her story hit me hard, not just because of what she went through, but because of how many agents I know are feeling stuck right now. She pulled back the curtain on her life, her losses, and how she fought her way forward with clarity, grit, and purpose.
Rebuilding from the Ground Up: How Purpose, Grit, and Strategy Transformed Tameka’s Career
We often hear success stories once people have made it. However, few are willing to talk about what came before the win. Tameka didn’t just switch careers—she had to rebuild her entire life.
A Sudden Career Collapse and the Turning Point
Tameka was a non-profit executive making six figures in Kansas City. Then, one day, everything fell apart. She was fired at 9 a.m. Her husband was fired from the same organization at 10 a.m. They had two kids under the age of eight and didn’t know a soul in the city.
The aftermath wasn’t pretty. Depression hit. She described how hard it was just to get out of bed.
What changed? A moment of raw honesty and faith.
She threw a Bible across the room in frustration. It landed open to a scripture about virtuous women. That moment lit the fire.
From Survival Mode to CEO Mindset
Tameka had a real estate license. That was it. But what she also had was a skillset from nonprofit life—fundraising, budgeting, operations, and grant writing. She applied it all. She studied Missouri and Kansas real estate law. She built her own firm. She created her logo, colors, website, and everything from scratch.
She couldn’t rely on a network because she didn’t have one. Instead, she leaned on contracts and grants. She found money to fix up a building and opened her first office. She had agents working from her home until that space was ready.
Finding Her Niche and Owning It
One of the most powerful things she shared was how she found her niche. She made a list of what she didn’t want to do, like no buyers in the car and no weekend showings. Then, she listed what she was good at and what others said she was good at.
The answer: working with investors.
That became her focus. Not just because she liked it, but because she could dominate it.
Now, her name is tied to that niche. People refer her to others without her asking. She’s known as the go-to for investors and developers.
The Power of Education and Empowerment
Tameka is an educator at heart. She wrote “99 Ways to Make Money in Real Estate: Finding a Niche That Pays,” then expanded it to 114 Ways. She trains women through Be-Niched, helping them understand investment strategies that work.
What stuck with me was how intentional she is about education. She said agents shouldn’t just take the required courses. They should dive deep into their specialty. Learn more. Study more. Own that space.
And, I couldn’t agree more. That’s why I started podcasting through the Icons of Real Estate podcast production. My conversations with guests help me share expert strategies with agents who need it most. It’s helped me build trust and authority, and it’s helped others grow their business through learning.
Going Global: Building in the Dominican Republic and Beyond
After COVID, a friend told Tameka about beachfront condos in the Dominican Republic (DR) selling for $50,000. She jumped on a plane, and within months, she had invested, created a new certification for international agents, and opened her own office overseas.
She now works with the DR’s Ministry of Tourism and is developing her own branded hotel and residences. She’s also doing work in Mexico, partnering with developers who sell land on monthly payment plans starting at around $100.
This isn’t just about selling homes—it’s about building wealth for herself and her community. She’s teaching people how to own land, develop it, and retire with options.
What Every Agent Needs to Know About the Future of Real Estate
Tameka sounded the alarm on something big: Hedge funds currently own 1 in 7 homes. In 8 years, that number could rise to 4 in 7.
If you’re an agent and don’t have a strategy, you could be locked out. Tameka says this is the time to specialize. Learn what you’re best at. Learn what the market needs. Find your niche and own it.
